Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Cure in Your Mind

We used to think that the cure to Rheumatoid Arthritis was either non-existent or wholly relied on the use of heavy pharmaceuticals. Today the approach to removing symptoms of this arthritis disease or even sending it completely into 'remission' is very different.

Whilst many still rely on pharmaceuticals to treat certain symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis, such as inflammation, pain, swelling and stiffness, some are resorting more and more to the use of natural cures and this is bearing increasing success. When I left home and went to University (and therefore left the dysfunctional family situation I was living in), my symptoms (which had not been treated at all) suddenly disappeared. Doctors believed that I had been suffering from Juvenile Arthritis and that it was perfectly normal for the symptoms to recede years later. I therefore went on with my life thinking the disease was gone.

But, years later, when I started visiting members of my family for prolonged periods, I began to suffer from severe knee pain which, months later, almost preceded me from walking normally. The knee was swollen, inflamed, extremely painful day and night and no amount of painkillers worked at all. Then my right elbow started to feel very stiff and painful; I became disappointed and was ready to try anything and everything. I went to a reputable homeopath, who was convinced that my Rheumatoid Arthritis was triggered by certain familial events which were affecting my mind; with homeopathic remedies aimed at treating repressed anger, psychological pain and resentment (as well as resignation and abandonment), 3 months later my knee and elbow pain was gone and I was able to resume my very active lifestyle (I am an outdoors person, I love to hike, swim and cycle) in full. Not once did I take any painkiller or pharmaceutical. This means that, in my case at least, my homeopath was correct in diagnosing my Rheumatoid Arthritis as mind-based.

Gout is the most dreaded form of arthritis that comes with intense and anguishing pain. Gout has been known over the centuries as a disease that affects only the aristocrats. Osteoarthritis – Not Just Wear and Tear

An interesting study out of the University of Edinburgh in the UK demonstrates this principle quite clearly. Researchers performed a double blind placebo controlled study of patients scheduled for knee replacement. Half the patients received a tablespoon of high potency cod liver oil each day and the reminder received a placebo. As the original knees were removed, they were analyzed for enzymatic marks indicating pain and inflammation. The results were quite striking. The marks for both pain and inflammation were significantly reduced in the active group compared to the placebo group. In their published research, they indicated their belief that even this single measure could significantly reduce the incidence of knee displacements. Since joints can usually only be replaced twice and do not last all that long, delaying or preventing the need is critically important for long term health and quality of life.

Other research has demonstrated that some people are sensitive to the Nightshade family (potatoes, tomatoes and peppers). Proteins in these vegetables have an affinity for joint tissue and since many suffer some degree of leaky gut syndrome, some of these foreign proteins pass undigested into the blood stream and bond to joint tissues. The immune system attacks the foreign proteins and inadvertently causes collateral damage to the tough but delicate and all important cartilage lining the ball and socket of each joint. Milk and gluten too, can wreak havoc on the joints of those who are sensitive.

Given the role of inflammation in Osteoarthritis, there are three approaches which may bring significant improvement or relief.

1) Use nutrient agents which many have reported to be effective in decreasing inflammation and / or helping heal leaky gut syndrome, such as curcumin, Omega 3s, Equilib nutrient and Arthrimend.

2) Do a simple test of strictly eliminating suspected foods for at least three weeks to see if symptoms improve. This means carefully examining all mixed herbs and spices and prepared foods for eliminated substances.

3) Start doing consistent gentle but regular exercises and work up to full range of motion for joints.

This is beneficial for two reasons

If this blood test shows elevated ferritin levels, you may have Hemochromatosis (one of the most common genetic errors seen in Caucasians). If left untreated, the accumulating accumulation of iron will have serious brain / body health effects including substantially increased risk of liver cancer and dementia. For many, simply donating blood regularly will keep iron levels in the optimum range and helps save lives.

The Heartbreak of Psoriasis – And Other Worries

People often complain about arthritis as if it were one disease. Untrue. Arthritis is a term used to describe more than 100 different conditions involving joint disease.

Some diseases are reliably mild. Others can be quite serious, involving other organ systems, and leading to potential disability as well as the possibility of a shortened life span.

One disease that is not well understood by both the general public as well as many physicians is psoriatic arthritis. This is the form of arthritis that often accompanies psoriasis, an autoimmune skin disease.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is not rare. According to one study (Gelfand J, et al. J AM Acad Dermatol 2005; 534: 573-577), as estimated 520,000 people in the United States have the condition.

It is not an easy disease to diagnose because it may present in a dizzying array of fashions.

The primary symptoms of PsA are joint pain and stiffness. However, other modes of presentation are almost as common. These include adhesitis (inflammation where tendons joint bones), dactylitis (swelling of a finger or toe so that it looks like a “sausage”), and skin psoriasis.

Enthesitis causes infection where tendons or ligaments attach to bone. Common sites for symptoms to occur are the Achilles tendon, the plantar fascia (bottom of the heel), medial knee, patellar tendon, (where the patellar tendon inserts into the patella), iliac crest, triceps tendon, and lateral epicondyle. In essence, enthesitis can occur at pretty much any point where a tendon, ligament or even joint attaches to bone.

Approximately, 30 per cent of patients with PsA have enthesitis. Because the symptoms can be widespread and vague and not limited to joints, the clinical picture can be confusing. Other conditions associated with widespread pain such as fibromyalgia may be considered in the list of diagnostic possibilities. The isolated presentation of what appears to be typical plantar fasciitis may be a sign of PsA.

The other symptom that is classic is dactylitis- the “sausageage.” The sausage appearance is due to inflammation of the tendon sheath in the finger or toe. Dactylitis also occurs in about 30 per cent of patients.

The importance of dactylitis is that it is a good indicator of disease severity. It also tells the doctor that the disease is active and not well-controlled. Dactylitis is also a harbinger of severe disease that can extremely lead to joint destruction.

Fortunately, there are medications which are extremely effective in controlling PsA. A combination of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) and biologics typically results in excellent disease control and remission.

Cooked vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, tapioca, chard, spinach, tapioca etc. are good.

Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help to cur the actions of free radicals which are destroying the healthy cells and exacerbating the damage at inflated sites. Inflammation produces cell-damaging molecules that are formed in response to toxins. Antioxidants protect the body from the effects of free radicals.

Include foods that are rich in Vitamin C, Selenium, Carotenes and Bioflavonoid in the diet. Vitamin C is available in sweet pepper, orange, grapefruit, strawberries, pineapple, papaya, lemon etc. Body will get Selenium from foods such as tuna, crab, oyster, lean beef, shrimp, whole grains and turkey. It is very good for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. We will get omega 3 fatty acids from salmon, herring, sardines, rainbow trout, pacific oysters, flax seed oil and walnuts. Consume foods containing omega 3 fatty acids three to five times a week.

Oliver oil should be used instead of vegetable oil or butter. It is a good mono saturated fat that contains antioxidants called polypenols that protects body against inflammation.

Along with the medication, selecting and avoiding the appropriate foods will also help to minimize the effect of the disease. If possible, be a vegetarian or limit the intake of red meat, vegetable oil, butter and eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables for the treatment of joint pains.

d) Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall. These are probably the most difficult exercises for all the fifty-plusers to do. You can use a balance bar or some of device that you can use that is convenient for you, even a back of a chair to use to balance yourself.

3) These exercises that I have mentioned all will give you a healthy life style and keep you mobile. This activity that I am talking about is a daily process, but you do not have to do the exercises in the same day, but it is important that you should do them once every week. They all require that you must keep active.
