Movement helps to decrease pain, increase range of motion and endurance, strengthen your muscles, decrease fatigue and improve overall muscle fitness. Choose the activities that build the muscles around your joints but do not damage them that are good for arthritis. Include low-impact aerobic exercise such as Walking, Cycling, Aquatic Exercises, Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Country Line or Ballroom Dancing, or a gentle exercise / stretch class.

The key is to have a regular exercise program. The goal is to do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity about 5 days / week.

Gardening can be very therapeutic and digging in the dirt can be helpful for sore hands.

Avoid: Running, Jumping, Tennis, High-impact aerobics, repetitive motions and inactivity.

Medications

No medications are completely free of side effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are the primary drug used for treatment with aspirin as the most common. Although NSAIDS provide temporary relief, they accelerate joint destruction in the long run. They prevent prostaglandin formation in order to decrease inflammation; they also inhibit cartilage synthesis and increase cartilage destruction, which accelerates osteoarthritis progression. Also, it may cause damage to the gastro-intestinal tract and increases ones' ulcer risk. Therefore, discuss with your doctor a medication plan for your specific pain symptoms.

Dietary and Lifestyle Modifications

Consider eating fish as salmon, mackerel, tuna, and herring as a source of omega 3's. Eat organic, unprocessed, unrefined foods with emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, legumes, lean meats, nuts, seeds and essential fatty acids from cod liver oil, flax seed oil, walnut oil, etc. Increase boron-rich foods including lettuce, cabbage, apples, dates, prunes, raisins, almonds and hazelnuts. Sulfur and methionine-containing foods as cage, brussel sprouts, garlic and onions are also beneficial. A half lb of fresh cherries or blueberries may be beneficial per day. They contain proanthocyanidins that aid in collagen metabolism and decrease joint inflammation. Consider juicing especially using pineapple due to its bromelain content and ginger due to its anti-inflammatory agent. Eat one cup of white or red grapes daily as the skin contains resveratrol, a natural compound known to act as a Cox-2 inhibitor and an antioxidant.

Drink six-eight 8-ounce glasses of filtered water per day to flush toxins and avoid dehydration.

Drink 1-2 cups of Green or Black Tea daily which is rich in polyphenols – compounds that suppress the expression of a key gene involved in arthritis infection.

Reduce or avoid eating dairy products, refined foods, meat, nightshade foods (tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant, peppers (not black pepper) and margarine)

Nightshade foods are alkaloids that increase inflammation and inhibit collagen repair.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and allergenic foods. An elimination / rotation diet is recommended. Avoid environmental toxins as much as possible. Avoid smoking, as the toxins in smoke cause stress on connective tissue.

Nutrient Applications

Although there may not be a magic bullet to “cure” arthritis, some supplements and / or extracts may help it to keep it better controlled. When buying a supplement, check its quality control, read labels carefully and try one product at a time to keep track of its effect.

Some supplements to consider:

Bromelain, Feverfew, Ginger and Turmeric- (have significant anti-inflammatory activity). Valerian, Passion Flower, Skullcap and Kava Kava are known muscle relaxants. White Willow Bark is the forerunner to aspirin. Boswellia Serrata has a strong analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity. Taking these 2 herbs can be just as effective as taking Motrin. (take 240mg of willow bark and 1,000mg of boswellia per day.

Proteolytic Enzymes, taken without food, reduces pain and inflammation. Antioxidants may include: Grape Seed Extract, Vitamins C and E, Zinc, Glutathione, Selenium and N-acetyl cysteine. Vitamin C and bioflavenoids help in decreasing the progress of osteoarthritis

Fish oil, Cod Liver oil and Black Currant Seed oil help to decrease inflammation.

Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate plus Sulfur and N-Acetyl-Glucosamine are building blocks for cartilage repair. Green Lipped Mussel Extract may be beneficial for severe osteoarthritis per a New England study.

Arthritis – The More You Know, The Better You Go!

I am a chiropractor and I treat patients in a chiropractic and massage wellness center in Bellevue, WA. I work with patients that have many different forms of arthritis and joint conditions everyday. This article will primarily focus on arthritis and its different forms (I will focus on two of the most common which are Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis). I will also discuss preventive measures as well as treatment options (natural) for existing arthritis conditions.

Most people think of Rheumatoid when they hear “arthritis.” There are many other forms, but I will expand on this one. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is considered an “autoimmune disease” where the immune system in the body attacks itself and causes damage, inflammation, swelling, and often disfigurement. It is unknown what is the actual cause for this disease and response. RA can occur at any age and is more prevalent in women. Symptoms that occurs with it include fatigue, loss of appetite, low fever, weakness, swollen glands. These are symptoms that occur in many diseases. Later in the development “morning stiffness” starts happening and it last for about an hour and starts lasting longer, then warmth and tenderness may start occurring and the joints can become stiff again with little use as quickly as an hour. The joint pain is felt on both sides of the body and usually felt in the fingers (but not fingertips), and can be felt in the wrists, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, toes, neck, jaw but are most commonly felt in the wrist, hands, knees, ankles and feet. Numbness, tingling, burning in the hands and feet is also a common symptom.

As the condition progresses, range of motion is decreed and as indicated earlier deformities can occur. Tests can be done to determine if rheumatoid arthritis is present and they include: complete blood count, c-reactive protein, rheumatoid factor test, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, x-rays, and synovial fluid analysis. As for treatment, beginning a diet high in anti-inflammatory foods is very beneficial. Some great ones are Kelp, WILD salmon, shitake mushrooms, green tea (tea in general), pineapple, turmeric, blueberry, papaya, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and extra virgin olive oil. If you can keep these regularly in you diet you will feel more energetic and the inflammatory process in the body will be slowed down significantly. Performing regular range of motion exercises such as stretching your fingers and wrists into extension and flexion to keep the joints loose. Of course, chiropractic is a big factor because we focus on keeping joints moving in their full range of motion. Strengthening exercises such as grip and extension exercises for you fingers and wrists are very beneficial. All of these treatment recommendations are also preventative measures. Whats even more beautiful is that they are all natural and have no side effects except better health.

The next arthritic condition I am going to discuss is osteoarthritis (OA). This is the most common arthritis, most common joint disorder, and it is definitely the most common I see at my office. OA is considered “aging” or “wear and tear.” Everything we do contributions to OA which is why it is so important take care of ourselves, follow prevention, and seek treatment. In OA cartilage is worn down between joints and bones become closer together and more stress is put on the joints causing more damage and aging. Bones begin making “spurs” which are bony deposits on the bone as a result of increased stress, weight bearing, and wear and tear. These spurs can be very damaging and disruptive. Also, ligaments and muscles around joints become more stiff and less flexible because they are now taking on a role of splinting and bracing. OA usually begins showing symptoms in middle age. Increased risk factors include family history, being overweight, overuse, trauma, sitting too much, computer work, and lack of activity.

The most common symptoms include stiffness and pain. You may even notice a rubbing, crackling, or friction of the joints and this is because of reduced cartilage (joint space) and bony issues such as spurs. Activity “warms” them up and causes symptoms to subside, but as people age it gets worse and worse. X-rays are a common diagnostic test. Eating and anti-inflammatory diet is beneficial, massage can help, strengthening and stretching is helpful, and yoga is also therapeutic. Chiropractic is very helpful with restoring joint function, decreasing arthritis symptoms, and preventing arthritis. It helps treat, and prevent OA tremendously by increasing range of motion and keeping the joints loose and mobile. This helps the joint keep its “space,” heal, and stay well.

Gout and Causes: Answering the Question ‘What Causes Gout?’

Gout is a very painful form of arthritis that can occur when your body builds up too much uric acid. The excess acid can be deposited as sharp uric crystals in joints; deposits of uric acid that appear as lumps under the skin; and / or as kidney stones in the kidneys.

Basically gout is a disease that results from an overload of uric acid in the body. This overload leads to the formation of tiny uric crystals that deposit themselves in the tissues of the body, especially the joints. When the crystals form in the joints, this can cause joint inflammation or arthritis.

Gout is often related to the body's ability to process uric acid properly. It is usually a neutral, and unnecessary, chemical that is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and eliminated from the body through urine. People with gout usually get it because their body either produces too much of it or it does a poor job in eliminating it. Uric acid occurs naturally in the body but can also be increased by consuming foods that contain a lot of the substance called purine. In general, foods that are high in fat or cholesterol are also high in purines. Dairy products and certain vegetables (spinach, cauliflower, peas, mushrooms, and asparagus) are rich in purines and should be avoided by people suffering gout. Generally, red meat and fish like mackerel and sardines should have been reduced or avoided as they are rich in purines as well.

One can be more likely to have gout if you:

• Are overweight or obese
• Consume too much alcohol
• Have high blood pressure
• Are male
• Eat too many foods rich in purines
• Are exposed to lead in the environment
• Have had an organ transplant
• Use some medicines such as thiazide diuretics, levodopa, aspirin, cyclosporine

Who is affected by gout?

There are approximately 5 million people in the United States who suffer from gout. It is nine times more frequent in men than in women. Gout occurs in men after the age of puberty and peaks at age 75 while in women it generally occurs after menopause.

Bottom line, uric acid deposits are the main cause of gout. As a disease, gout is nothing to ignore, and should be given the serious attention it describes.

Can Gout Be Cured Naturally?

Unlike arthritis which is caused by the body's own immune system attacking the joints, gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals. These crystals are formed due to high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream and tend to get collected at the joints, especially the joint near the big toe and cause tremendous pain.

This high levels of uric acid can be caused due to any reason. Some link gout to the genes saying that if your parents had gout, the chances of you getting gout too increase. Certain kinds of food are also supposedly to increase the incidence of gout, for instance foods that are high in purines are supposedly to give you gout. Considering that meat fish and pulses are high in purines, you will probably have to eat a very low protein diet to ensure that you do not get gout, but you will probably land up with other problems if you do this.

Traditional medicine though treats illnesses a little differently from the way modern medicine does. While modern medicines concentrate on reducing the symptoms and therefore removing the problem, traditional medicine looks at the afflicted person holistically and tries to remove the underlying problem.

For instance the Ayurvedic cure for gout is a concoction of herbs that will keep the uric acid in the blood soluble. This prevails the formation of crystals which is what causes the inflammation and pain.

With the uric acid remaining in the blood, the body's own excretory system is able to safely remove it from the blood. These medicines along with a little bit of physical activity to keep the internal organs in good shape is generally all that is needed to ensure that attacks of gout are reduced drastically.

Other herbal cures concentrate on increasing the intake of fruit extracts like cherries that contain a lot of anthocyanan. This anthocyanan helps reduce inflammation, and also works to reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood. Many people have tested to the efficiency of cherries so much so that they say that they have been free of gout for decades as long as they take a few cherries every day.

While there are a number of other natural cures that can cure gout, you need to be careful that you are not taken for a ride when you purchase such medicines. Many times the manufacturers of such medicines will have tested their product at all because it is not requited. This means that the combination of herbs my at best work as a place, but at worst, not give you any benefit at all.

You therefore need to do a little bit of background checking on the manufacturer to ensure that you get quality products. Even if you end up paying more for it, you are at least guaranteed that it is safe.

Not All Joint Pain Is Arthritis Related

Arthritis pain can come in a variety of different forms, including Osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative arthritis; Egypt rheumatoid arthritis. Gout is also a type of arthritis. Most of the time when people start looking for joint pain relief due to arthritis (or other causes); they have some inflammation and stiffness in the area.

However, not all joint pain is caused by arthritis. I had finger pain which was not diagnosed as any type of arthritis at all. In fact, the doctors never did figure out what was going on and ever I just quit going in for checks for the “We just do not know” diagnosis.

Even though my pain was not caused by arthritis, it WAS in the joints and therefore I was prescribed glucosomine sulfate as a treatment. When that did not work, I was moved on to Glucosamine Chondroitin. After taking the glucosamine chondroitin mixture for about two months, my whole body hurt and I thought I was sure going to die. I figured it was just the joint issue getting worse, so I continued to look for joint pain relief on my own.

That's when I started using an Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement. I actually started this supplement after watching Dr. Oz one day where he said that many people do not get enough Omega 3 in their body and a supplement like this was a good way to remain in overall good health. I figured it could not hurt any more than what the other supplements were doing to me; so I got off the glucosamine and just started taking the Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement.

And I'm happy to report that they worked – for me at least! Now remember that I just said that my diagnosis was not joint pain due to arthritis. I had all the tests done to rule out the major diseases before I started to self treat things. And what worked for me might not work for everyone, but I've always been one to try natural supplements before synthetic ones (though, glucosamine chondroitin is a natural combination).

Do not be afraid to test a few things when you need joint pain relief. And, if you start feeling worse, stop taking the joint pain supplements for a while to see if you are having side effects from the pills. I guess the body ache thing was not just something I experienced either! While chatting with my neighbor she told me the same thing happened to her, but MSM was what was working for her.
