I Learnt About Gout Arthritis the Hard Way

I never knew about Gout arthritis until I got it myself. To be honest, I had barely any idea about Gout itself until I was presented with the condition myself. There are so many people across the UK who suffer from Gout and yet it is a condition rarely spoken about.

– if you suffer from high blood pressure, skip this method as the high sodium content could have detrimental effects on your blood pressure.

Ice pack or bag of frozen veg.

– ice the affected area for 10-15 min intervals. Will help with swelling.

Honey and Cinnamon

– dissolve 1 Tbsp of RAW honey in a cup of boiling water. Add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. Stir and drink 2-3 times a day.

– Works well if you take it before bed and after waking up. It tastes great and has a whole host of benefits! Too many to mention here but look it up for yourself. It's worth it.

Epsom Salts

– soak your feet in warm water mixed with epsom salts to get quick relief. It will help to reduce stress and the magnesium in the salts can also help to lower your blood pressure and improve your circulation.

Eat more Strawberries, Cherries and Berries

– very high in anti-oxidants and vitamin C as well as other important nutrients and minerals.

Experimental Gout Drug Outperforms Current Medications

Researchers have presented exciting findings to the 2011 European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Congress. An investigational gout medication, lesinurad, was able to achieve rapid and sustained reductions in urate levels in gout patients who did not receive the desired results with commonly used uric acid lowering medications.

“Lesinurad, a URAT1 inhibitor that increases the urinary excretion of uric acid, is a potential treatment option for patients with gout,” said Dr. Fernando Perez-Ruiz, a Spanish researcher from the Hospital de Cruces, Baracaldo in Vizcaya.

Lenisurad has shown significant uerate lower activity both used alone and in combination with either prescription allopurinal (brand brand Zyloprim) or febuxostat (Uloric). The Spanish study involved 208 gout patients who had high blood urate levels for at least 6 months, even while taking the gout drug allopurinol. Patients continued on allopurinol and were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or lesinurad at doses of 200 mg, 400 mg, or 600 mg for four weeks.

All three groups who were given lesinurad showed significantly lower uric acid levels at the end of the month. The percentage of patients who achieved the target for uric acid levels after treatment was 28% in the placebo group, 71% in the 200 mg group, 76% in the 400 mg group, and 87% in the 600 mg group.

After the initial 4 weeks of treatment, 115 patients entered an extension phase in which most of them continued treatment with 200 mg of lesinurad. At week 28, 83% of the first 30 assessable patients were at target serum urate levels, with no serious adverse effects.

It's assumed that this lowering of uric acid levels will have a significant impact on the dissolving and reabsorption of gout tophi (deposits of crystallized uric acid) in the body.

New gout medications are few and far between, although there are currently at least eight gout drugs “in the pipeline”. The first new gout drug to be approved in 40 years was febuxostat (name brand Uloric) in 2009. In 2010 the FDA approved Krystexxa, an intravenous medication for chronic, severe gout that did not respond to other treatments. Due to the stringent FDA approval process, it may be some time before American gout patients can buy Lenisurad.

The lesinurad mechanism of action is different from that of allopurinol and febuxostat. Both allopurinol and febuxostat are xanthine oxydase inhibitors which decrease the production of uric acid. Lesinurad is a uricosuric drug which increases elimination of uric acid through the kidneys.

Initial studies show that lesinurad may have significant advantages over another existing uricosuric drug, probenecid (Benemid), including less interaction with other drugs and more effectiveness in patients taking diuretics. This added benefit is because lesinurad is also active against another important regulator of uranium secretion, OAT4. OAT4 is thought to be responsible for the high uric acid levels in gouty arthritis patients whose condition is caused or worsened by diuretics.

So what I want you to do is focus on the extreme pain you feel during a gout attack. Use that unbearable feeling to make life changes in your food intake that will move you towards pleasure.

Most dietary plans focus on the reduction of uric acid in the body. It also focuses on avoiding other conditions such as obesity that are common in gout patients. The common recommendation is a diet low in purine. Purine is a colorless crystalline compound which forms uric acid on oxidation.

Here are the guidelines recommended by the American Medical Association. They are by no means a complete solution. They are a starting point that will need to be adjusted as you notice how your body reacts to different food intake. You will learn the gout foods which are safe for you and in what amounts based on the gout attacks that occurs. It would be a good idea to keep track of what you eat and then the attacks you have. That way you can take a step back and notice which foods are corresponding to your pain.

1. Low protein diet (proteins are typically high in purine) – eat lean meats, poultry, or soy as 15% of calories

2. keep your fat intake to 30% of calories (preferably only 10% containing animal fats)

3. Eat high complex carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruits, and fiber-rich whole grains.

Here are a few of the specific foods that you should think about adding to your diet.

Tart Cherries and cherry juice are used by many individuals with gout. They contain natural plant compounds called phenolics. These compounds have anti-inflammatory effects. The USDA does not allow distributors to position them for their health benefits. However, adding them to you diet can not hurt.

Celery is another beneficial food which you can eat. This can be taken as either celery stalks or celery seed extract.
