Exercise Prevents Premature Death of Arthritis

If you pay attention to the latest health findings, you already know that an inactive lifestyle and low fitness, two hits that characterize many people with arthritis, increase a person's chances of developing several potentially fatal chronic disease, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure , diabetes, and possibly strokes and cancer. As you may also know, coronary artery disease, which causes heart attacks, is the leading killer in the United States and most other industrialized nations. Although you may not necessarily die as a direct result of your arthritis, it can ease you into a lifestyle that's lethal. People who use their arthritis as an excuse to put their feet up and coddle themselves for the reminder of their days are likely to reduce the number of those days.

In 1987, Dr. Kenneth E. Powell and his colleagues from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta scrutinized over 40 respected studies that began early as 1950. The group's goal was to assess how, and if, exercise could prevent deaths from heart disease. They came to the conclusion that physical activity is just as strong a risk factor for premature heart disease as the traditional risk factor we hear so much about cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, and a high cholesterol level. Since the publication of Dr.Powell's overview, several more key studies have been completed, and they strongly support the Powell group's conclusions. One of these studies, our Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, tracked more than 13,000 healthy male and female Cooper Clinic patients who aerobic fitness varied from low to moderate to high. The results of the 8-year followup of these 10,224 male and 3,124 female patients found that the death rates of the unfit soared compared with those with moderate and high fitness. Because the statistical were adjusted for age, a person's age was neutralized as a contributory factor in his or her death. The evidence is compelling that regular exercise can reduce the risk, by almost 50%, of dying from heart disease.

How is this applicable to people with arthritis?

To date, no studies have specifically evaluated how exercise can alter, for good or ill, an arthritis person's risk of dying prematurely from heart disease. Yet when you consider that many of the older participants in the previously mentioned studies were unduly suffering from osteoarthritis (because it's almost universal in people over 65 years old), a special study would hardly seem necessary. It seems logical to assume that people with osteoarthritis who exercise regularly will experience the same reduced risk of death from heart disease as active people without this condition. This seems all the more logical considering that there's no direct relationship between osteoarthritis, which is localized to the musculoskeletal system, and coronary artery disease, which involves the cardiovascular system.

Rheumatoid arthritis is another matter. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in rheumatoid arthritis patients, just as it is in general populations. Thus, it seems likely that regular exercise would prove effective in reducing the risk of premature death in anyone with this condition. However, rheumatoid arthritis does not confine its damage to the musculoskeletal system. In advanced cases, the skin, heart, lungs, nervous system, eyes, blood and blood vessels, spleen, and lymph nodes can be adversely affected. Some of these complications-referred to collectively as systemic complications because they involve different organ systems through the body can heighten a person's risk of dying prematurely. So the effect of regular exercise on the risk of dying from these systemic complications is still partly unknown.

Clearly, there's a wealth of investigation yet to be done in this area. One small-scale, 9-year study of 75 rheumatoid arthritis patients, conducted by Vanderbilt University School of Medicine researchers, sheds a little more light on the situation. During the course of the study, 20 of the 75 projected died. The causes of their death were similar to those for the general population, but the researchers were surprised by one particular finding: Low functional capacity tripled rheumatoid arthritis patient's risk of dying during the study period. Functional capacity was based on the subject's ability to

a) rise from a chair, walk 25 feet, sit back down in a chair within reasonable length of time

b) undo and redo five buttons as quickly as possible.

The researchers believe that the connection between low functional capacity and premature death “raise the possibility that aggressive therapy directed at improving functional capacity may be appropriate in rheumatoid arthritis.” The obvious way to accomplish this is through a program of regular exercise.

The Knees That Didn’t Work

There's nothing in our bodies that is not connected with a long list of other things in our body, all of which which are connected to even more of our body parts. The old spiritual that said the knee bone was connected to the ankle bone, etc., etc., etc. had it right, and whatever happens to one bone affects all the others.

But the connections go waaaay beyond our bones. Let me tell you a story.

A drunk driver slammed into my parents' car when I was a baby. Doctors pronounced me to be just fine, but I was not even close to fine. For one thing, my thyroid gland did not work. For another, neither did my adrenal glands. When those two major players are not in the game, you're in trouble. Big trouble.

And all those connections that nobody knows about come into play. By the time I was twelve, my knees did not work well. If I joined the neighborhood gang for a friendly game of softball, one trip around the bases was all it took for me to end up with knee the size of large grapefruits, and hurting like you can not believe. For days.

And that's when the snap, crackle and pop noises started. By my twenties, going down stairs, as my knees made all sorts of unpleaseless noises with each step, embarrassed me. People made comments about the racket.

I started wearing elastic knee braces, hoping they would contain the noise. They did not.

An orthopedic surgeon said the synovial fluid, the viscous fluid that kept my knees lubricated, was gone. It would never come back, and I would end up in a wheel chair.

Well, I was getting a lot of that “abandon hope all ye who enter here” talk from various doctors, so I decided it was up to me. I did not know what I could do, but someone had to do something, and I appeared to be the only one willing to try.

I started by learning more about nutrition, both food and supplements. It took a very long time, but, step by step, life improved.

I was not freezing cold all the time. My energy started to come back; sleeping my life away was no longer necessary. My eyes were not puffy, at least most of the time (thyroid). The dark circles went away (adrenals). My blood sugar did not live in the basement anymore, which helped my brain a lot. And on, and on, and on.

Hope shown up more frequently. Hope is a truly wonderful thing.

One day, poking around in a dresser drawer, I came across my knee braces, and I realized I did not need them anymore. In fact, I had not needed them for a while, but, focused on all the other good news I was experiencing, I had not noticed.

I do not know what part of my nutrition agenda did the trick, and I'm happy to report my knee problems never returned. Now I'm a grandmother, and my knee still work “like butter.” No swelling, no pain, and no noise.

What does a conversation have to do with bad knees? If you want a schematic of all the interactions that cause the problem, and those that fix the problem, you've come to the wrong place.

But I can tell you my results-knees and all the rest-came from the only weapon I had to fight the battle: Nutrition.

At one point, a doctor prescribed natural thyroid, and that helped. But when I added nutrition, it helped a whole lot more. I'm really grateful I decided to learn how nutrition could help my body.

Especially since nobody knows how a concussion creates all the mayhem it does. Doctors do not have a clue. They keep scanning brain waves with electroencephalogram after electroencephalogram, but find no solutions.

Fixing starts when we realize the brain is only a symptom of what's going on. The problems that need fixing are all the unknown connections that jumped into the fray.

And we'll never know what they are. Every single body since the beginning of time has been unique-and so are the connections that happen when a body tries to heal itself.

We never know what's going on in our body, but our body does. It knows every single thing that's out of balance and what's needed to get back in balance.

And it tells us via symptoms. Since we do not realize that symptoms are messages from our body, we ignore them or complain about them.

We need to learn the language of symptoms to be able to help our bodies heal, and that's what I write about. That's what got me out of the ditch, and now I share my research.

We can all be our own worst enemies. And arthritis sufferers seem to be especially prone to this. This can sometimes occur because we feel guilty for being slower and taking time for ourselves. After all, so many times you have to begin out of activities and social events because you are experiencing too much pain or you're tired.

However, we must realize that we have to be kind to ourselves and only we can do that for ourselves. But in this incredibly competitive society of ours, how many of us really feel good about ourselves?

It seems that feeling worthy and feeling good about ourselves is a fleeting thing especially as we need to feel special and above average to feel worthy. This feeling of unworthiness is amplified many times over for the chronically-ill person who sometimes feels below everyone because she hurts pain and is tired all the time.

It is very hard to feel good about yourself if you are feeling down and in pain all the time. We must also realize that pain equals stress, regardless of what else we are experiencing in our lives. So, given our situation as a chronically-ill person, we have to work hard at first to become self-compassionate with ourselves, regardless of what the world and our family is telling us.

We all desire to feel special. And we all look for outside approval to feel special. But this is not necessary and many times it can set us up for a lot of hardship and difficulty because people are not consistently praiseworthy towards ourselves. Therefore, in order to have consistent approval that we have control over we must discover that we are special from the inside. In other words, we have to get in the driver's seat of our self-worth and send loving kindness to ourselves without the need for others to always be complimenting us and making us feel worthy.

To be self-compassionate towards ourselves we should treat ourselves with love and kindness. We should make sure that we eat healthy foods and sleep well. We should also not overdo it.

Here are a few concrete ways to be self-compassionate towards ourselves:

• If you are having a bad pain day, go over your to-do list and do only the most necessary things. Be very scrupulous to include what you must do and move the rest of the to-do items for another day.

• Take rest breaks every few hours-regardless of whether you are having a bad day or a good one.

• Do something nice for yourself every day.

• Practice extreme self-care on the weekend. Decide what you need to do for self-care-it may be taking a bubble bath before bed, putting on a special body lotion after your bath, getting into fluffy socks and slippers or a nice lacy night gown. Whatever, it is, just do something nice for yourself

• Take mini-rest retreats. It may be an hour or two a day or a day a week. Most of us take Sundays off. But when we decide to take Sundays off, we should make sure that we do not sneak in work that we have to do.

• Have a massage at least once a month. If you can afford it, make two appointments a month.

• Meditate a few times a day, even if it is for a few minutes at a time.

• Stop what you are doing a few times a day and take a few deep breaths. Preferably try to do this every hour.

By taking these concrete steps, you will be taking care of yourself. And you will feel better in the process.

I will be spending a whole month on self-compassion. I think it is one of the most important things that chronically-ill people can do for themselves.

Stop Stepping Around The Health Elephant In The Room

So you have arthritis, or high blood pressure, obesity, type 2 diabetes, possibly an autoimmune disease, ADHD or maybe you feel anxious, tired or depressed.

In this busy day and age the temptation is to make your way to a busy medical practiceer where your future wellbeing is laid out in a consultation that takes ten to fifteen minutes or thirty minutes if you find a particularly devoted practitioner.

Maybe you will be referred to a medical specialist and you will be prescribed a pharmaceutical drug. But what if you have two, three or more of the above problems or maybe some others? How many medications are you prepared to swallow?

A Personal Story and a Magic Substance

Things started to go wrong one sunny afternoon high up in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. I was skiing with friends down an empty slope. It was warm enough to ski in shirtsleeves and the snow was just right. It was ten years ago.

There was little to disappointment up there – the surrounding mountains are the most spectacular in the Alps, dominated by the towering masses of the Eiger and the Jungfrau. The sun was shining from a cobalt sky. The birds were singing. I thought I was fit and healthy and I was having a good time with friends. But there was a little niggle. It felt as though I had pulled a muscle at the top of my left thigh. I could not place the injury and put it down to the spontaneous aches and pains of being nearly sixty.

I was at the back of the group at the time when we came round a good tight bend and there in front of us were two large mounds like ocean rollers stretched across the slope. There is nothing quite like flying through the air on skis in perfect control and landing back on the snow as though you were quite kissing it. My plan evolved in a split second. I would take both bumps in the same jump. As I took off there was a pain in my left thigh but it was too late to do anything. I went up in the air and came straight down from six feet up and landed heavily.

Sitting there, slightly dazed and with snow melting quickly inside my shirt and down into my trousers I pondered on the meaning of life and how to sustain it. I remember thinking that maybe skiing as I had known it was over for me. Sometimes it was time to buy a pair of slippers.

Three weeks later I went to see a physiotherapist. I'm guessing now, but if you're reading this it's probably you may have been through a similar experience. The physio had seen many people like me before. She told me to lie on my back. 'Can you bend your knee up to your chest?' I tried and managed to get it half way. 'I'm sorry to say you've got osteoarthritis. I see it all the time. ' What ?! Osteoarthritis !! ??

Dazed once more and on her recommendation, I make the necessary arrangements and a few weeks later her diagnosis was confirmed by the x-rays. My left hip needed replacing and the right one, although arthritic, could wait a little longer. I should say now that I never had the awful pain people experience when there is no cartilage left to keep the bones apart. Mine was just chronic discomfort that was only partially relieved by Ibuprofen.

Within six months of falling in Switzerland I had a new hip and what a brilliant job it was! Even now, ten years on, I still give thanks to the surgeon.

Now we come to the nitty gritty. What about the future and what is there to look forward to? Two years later and somewhat depressed, I paid another visit to the surgeon. This time it was both knees that were hurting and guess what? 'Your right knee is completely knackered and the left one is just knackered,' he said. Neither of them were bad enough to be operated on just then, but he put me down for another visit in twelve months to see how much worse they were likely to be.

Now I know the prognosis for knees is not as good as for hips, so I left the hospital reeling, and limping slightly, and even more depressed than before my visit. I came to the conclusion that like most people of my age, I was gradually falling apart, just like the car I was now climbing into stiffly. Morosely I began browsing on the internet and quite quickly discovered that judicious exercise was paramount in keeping osteoarthritis from getting worse! After experimenting I soon found a way of exercising that suited me. Walking up and down hills and even hardcore trips in the Snowdonia range of North Wales were fine mostly, although any flat walking caused discomfort and I would need to take Ibuprofen for a day or two after mountain walking. One night a week in the gym pumping iron made a marked improvement too with no after aches at all. This combined with my job as a gardener, which of course involves a lot of bending down and lifting heavy lumps of rock etc. Here, once again, walking on the flat for more than a few hundred yards is the only thing to cause discomfort. I say 'is' because I have stuck this time for almost four years now. I went to see the surgeon again after the twelve months and this time I was full of beans. He concluded that exercise was the best remedy for holding off the new knee operations for as long as possible, and he added that he wished more people would do the same.

What I was unaware of is that there is a magic substance to help us even more than just exercise and that is – WATER! Once we get over fifty we need to drink much more water anyway. Preferably this should have a Ph value above 7. The stuff out of the tap suffices as it is just over 7 but I now have a water filter that takes it to more than 9. After our mid fifties body water levels can drop by around 15 %. This tends to deple synovial fluid which keeps our joints lubricated.

I guess we all know not to eat too much citrus but most bottled water is acidic too, so we should not drink too much of that either. Since I started on this extra regime, I am drinking a liter more water a day than I used to, and have stopped taking Ibuprofen so there is a definite plus because I am no longer munching pain killers as though they were sweeties.

So there we are. The acronym to remember is a simple one – WED.

Drink more Water – up to a liter more a day than you usually do and with a pH of more than 7.

Find a good Exercise regime that suits you. This will keep tendons and muscles strong. Tendons and muscles, remember, are what hold your new hip joints in place so even after hip replacements Exercise is vital. Exercise increases blood flow which services your knee joints and helps to keep them in equilibrium.

And finally, stick to a suitable low acid Diet. I have now learnt to love beetroot, avocado, garlic, asparagus and my favorite night time drink, fresh ginger tea. Processed food and drink, and that includes energy drinks and too much meat, should be kept to a minimum.

  • 2 cups of Basic Bone Broth

Why Rheumatoid Arthritis May Be Made Worse By Your Diet

In recent decades the main focus in the treatment of many autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis has been pharmaceutical drugs. This is understandable because there is serious money invested in research and of course in the sale of such drugs.
